Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is a scalp reaction that leads to a speeding up of one’s natural cycle of skin replenishment.
White flakes falling like a sprinkling of cheese to clothing is very disturbing appearance.
  
Causes of Dandruff
  • Dry skin -Common cause of occurrence of itching and flaking skin.
  • Skin irritation and oily scalp (seborrheic dermatitis)
  •  Common cause of dandruff marked with an oily scalp covered with white or yellowish coating
  • Rarely shampooing
  • If one does not regularly wash the oil and skin cells from the scalp, it can cause dandruff
  • Psoriasis -A skin disease which can also affect the scalp. 
  • Eczema - on the scalp allows the occurrence of dandruff.
  • Sensitive to hair care products (contact dermatitis) 
  • Shampooing too often or using too many hair care  products.
  • The fungus Malassezia -Can irritate the scalp and cause more skin cells to grow.
Factors Influencing to Cause Dandruff
  • Age
Dandruff usually is experienced by young adults and continues until middle age. But it is also possible that the older people may also experience dandruff, because for some people dandruff can be a stubborn problem.
Man  Men experience more dandruff. Experts think this has to do with male hormones that contribute to the occurrence of dandruff.
  • Scalp and oily hair
    Malassezia Fungi live by getting food from the oil in the scalp. So people with scalp and oily hair will be more likely to have too greasy dandruff.
Diet A poor dietary iron intake (zinc) and vitamin B can make one more likely to experience dandruff.

History
  1. The shampoo itself originated in the eastern regions of the Mughal Empire particularly in the Nawab of Bengal where it was introduced as a head massage, usually consisting of alkali, natural oils and fragrances.
  2. Shampoo was first introduced in Britain by a Bihari entrepreneur named Sake Dean Mahomed, who first familiarized the shampoo in Basil Cochrane's vapour baths while working there in the early 19th century.
  3. Later, Sake Dean Mahomed together with his Irish wife, opened "Mahomed's Steam and Vapour Sea Water Medicated Baths" in Brighton, England. His baths were like Turkish bath where clients received a treatment of champi (shampooing). 
  4. In the 1860s, the meaning of the word shifted from the sense of massage to that of applying soap to the hair.Kasey Hebert was the first known maker of shampoo, and the origin is currently attributed to him. 
  5. Commercially made shampoo was available from the turn of the 20th century.
  6. Modern shampoo as it is known today was first introduced in the 1930s with Drene, the first shampoo with synthetic surfactants.
-A colloidal dispersion of various surfactants in water.
-Base components of a classical shampoo are cleansing agents, thickeners and water.
-Additives and adjuvants are added to the formula in order to help cleansing, enhance aesthetics properties, foaming or make hair shine.
-An anti-dandruff shampoo has the additional property of reducing or preventing dandruff effectively.

-Used to protect cosmetics and personal care products from spoilage by preventing or retarding bacterial growth.

  • Cocamidopropyl betaine
-Ampholytic surfactant, cleansing agent, foam booster.
  • Polyethylene glycol
-Co-solvent and humectants.
  • Benzyl alcohol
  • Viscosity decreasing agent. Also used as solvent, preservative.
  • Glycol distearate
  • Opacifying agent and emulsion stabilizer
  • Tetra-sodium EDTA
  • Sequestering agent.

Manufacturing Process


Quality Control check
-After all the ingredients are added to the batch, a sample is taken to the Quality Control (QC) lab for testing.
-Physical characteristics are checked to make sure the batch adheres to the specifications outlined in the formula instructions.
-The QC group runs tests such as pH determination, viscosity checks, and appearance and odor evaluations.
-They can also check the amount of detergent that is in the formula and whether there is enough preservative.
 -If the batch is found to be "out of Specification," adjustments can be made.
-For instance, acids or bases can be added to adjust the pH, or salt can be added to modify the viscosity.
-Colors can also be adjusted by adding more dye.
-After a batch is approved by QC, it is pumped out of the main batch tank into a holding tank where it can be stored until the filling lines are ready.
